Cannes, France – Monday 22 June 2009: Portugal has won the prestigious Young Lions Print Competition for hot creative talent at the 56th Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.

The Young Lions Competition is designed to catapult the careers of rising stars that are set to redefine the future use of images in advertising. The winning team members are Clara de Castro Darbandi-Tehrani (Copywriter) and Nuni Tome Teixeira, (Art Director) from Draft FCB. This year, the Jury selected Costa Rica to take second place, with third place awarded to Romania.
Commenting on their win, the ecstatic team from Portugal said: “We feel like gods! We are still digesting the fact that we have won. We took a lot of risks with our approach and this print ad is not in the typical style of work that often wins the Cannes Young Lions competition. We are so happy that the jury appreciated our idea.”
This year’s brief, disclosed to competitors on 20th June, was set by IFAW (the International Fund for Animal Welfare). The charity disclosed a brief to create an ad aimed at bringing awareness to the risks of buying wildlife souvenirs which are contributing to the decline of endangered species.
Thirty four teams, most of which comprised of an Art Director and Copywriter under 30 years of age, had just 24 hours to interpret the brief and develop a print ad, using imagery sourced from Getty Images’ range of creative, editorial and archival collections.
The work was scrutinised by the Jury members, headed up by the Jury President, David Lubars, chairman & Chief Creative Officer at BBDO North America. Commenting on Portugal’s winning work, David added “We looked for an entry that demonstrated out of the box thinking. Portugal went the furthest and the headline in this piece is the visual. It showed one integrated thought that elevated the picture and took it to something bigger and created an idea that moved us.”
The Young Lions Competition is being sponsored by Getty Images for the 12th consecutive year, reaffirming its commitment to promoting the best use of imagery in advertising. Getty Images was the exclusive content provider for the competitions, enabling contestants to draw from its broad range of creative, editorial, multimedia and archival collections.
The Getty Images team were on hand to provide technical support throughout the process and over the past year searched for the best up-and-coming creative talent from around the world. Spotted in a number of their local markets, the young hotshots went on to compete in regional heats before the all important final in Cannes.
Andy Saunders, Vice President of Imagery at Getty Images, commented: “This is our 12th year of involvement in the Young Lions competition and once again it produced work that both inspired and surprised us. It is a rewarding experience to see some of the best young creatives from around the world use Getty Images’ content to produce such fresh and innovative work.”
