The film adaptation of David Ebershoff’s novel The Danish Girl stars in the main role Nicole Kidman as Einar Wegener. Charlize Theron will play Wegener’s Californian wife, Greta Wegener, who encouraged her husband to pose as a female opera singer in order that she could finish a portrait and also encouraged him to permanently adopt the female identity.
Einar Wegener is a male artist who had a sex change operation to become a woman in 1930, and he changed his name from Einar Wegener to Lili Elbe. As a result, the king of Denmark declared the Wegeners’ marriage null and void in October 1930 (source Wikipedia).
