James Kenneth McManus, better known by his professional name of Jim McKay, was an American television sports journalist, the longtime ABC sportscaster who hosted “Wide World of Sports” for more than thirty years, has died on June 7, 2008, due to natural causes. He was 86 years old.
McKay has also covered a wide variety of special events, including horse-races such as the Kentucky Derby, golf events such as the British Open, and the Indianapolis 500.
McKay won numerous awards for journalism, including the George Polk Memorial Award and two Emmys — one for his sports coverage, the other for his news reporting — for his work at the 1972 Munich Olympics, which were tragically affected by the Black September terrorists’ attack on the Israeli athletes in the Olympic Village.
